Therion es un grupo sueco de metal sinfónico con corte Doom, aunque en sus primeros trabajos, su estilo se acercaba más en el Death Metal con toques influyentes de Black Metal. La formación se inició en 1985 bajo el nombre Blitzkrieg, con el que grabaron algunas demos a finales de los 80. Posteriormente, el grupo pasaría a llamarse Megatherion, para después reducir su nombre simplemente a Therion ("Bestia" en griego) tomado de la Biblia (Apocalipsis 13:1) y del grupo Celtic Frost en 1987. Su álbum debut Of Darkness apareció en el mercado en 1991.
